Every September a group of painters and artists gets together for a week-long retreat at Long Ledge, the Islesboro summer house of painter Brita Holmquist (an article and slide show is here). I feel so lucky to be included in this group. Painting with friends around, people of like mind nearby, working hard at our chosen profession, well, it's heaven being alone together! We scatter around the island to favorite places to paint during the day, or stay close to home and work on our various projects at Long Ledge. Which is very paintable indeed, both inside and out! Here is the southern end of the house, with a glimpse of Gilkey's Harbor and the mainland beyond. I painted this in Brita's driveway in the afternoon, facing west, at the retreat two years ago: Our retreat is always in September, but we do get together from time to time for other reasons. To wit, next week on the island, we are having our third group exhibit, at the Islesboro Historical Society and Museum, at 388 Main Road. The show opens on Friday evening August 16th and runs through Wednesday the 21st, hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I will have between ten and fifteen paintings up, including the one shown here. And I will be on the island myself, both sitting at the show with some of the other participants and also out painting as our schedule (and the weather) allows. (Island time, what's better? I ask you.)
